Antonios Psaroudakis: Turning a Sudden Diagnosis into a Mission for Awareness

My diagnosis

I discovered my congenital heart condition at the age of 54 during a routine cardiology examination, as part of my regular medical check-ups as a Hellenic Navy officer.

It was a completely unexpected discovery, as I had lived my entire life without knowing that I had a condition that had been present since birth. My first reaction was surprise, followed by uncertainty and many questions about what this diagnosis meant for my health and my future.

Looking for support

I worked closely with my cardiologist to better understand my condition and how to manage it. Learning about my heart condition and adapting to this new reality became an important part of my journey.

Throughout this period, the guidance of my healthcare professionals and the support of my family helped me face the challenges with confidence and move forward. My wife Eleni has been my strongest support throughout this journey. Her encouragement, understanding and constant presence have given me strength during every step.

"Learning about my heart condition and adapting to this new reality became an important part of my journey."

A change in perspective

This diagnosis changed the way I viewed my health and life. It made me realise that even people who feel healthy and follow regular medical check-ups may have conditions that remain undetected for many years.

It strengthened my belief in the importance of prevention, early diagnosis and active patient involvement in healthcare. It also gave me a new purpose: to use my experience to raise awareness and support other patients.

Speaking up

My personal experience also inspired me to become involved in patient advocacy through organisations such as EPIONI and cardiac patient groups.

I believe that patients need access to reliable information, support and the opportunity to have their voices heard in healthcare.

"It strengthened my belief in the importance of prevention, early diagnosis and active patient involvement in healthcare. "

Get checked

My message is simple: never take your health for granted. Regular medical check-ups and early diagnosis can make a significant difference.

A diagnosis can change your life, but it can also become an opportunity to create awareness, support others and transform personal experience into positive action.
